Deep in the Swiss Alps, a legendary retreat center is a spiritual oasis in an otherwise secular desert. And, no, regrettably, I am not writing from there.

Called L’Abri, it was founded by Christian thinker and writer Francis Schaeffer and his wife Edith, also a gifted writer. Since the 1950s, it has been a pilgrimage stop for thousands.

The U.S. Supreme Court decision of Dodd v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade, is a victory for all who support life. The decision ends federal protection of abortion and sends the subject back to individual states to determine how and if abortion will be allowed in the state. It is estimated that at least 26 states will have strong restrictions or bans on abortion. While it indeed should be celebrated, conservatives should not let our guard down; the war for the pro-life community wages on.

Last week the SCOTUS handed down a number of rulings reaffirming an originalist interpretation of the U.S. Constitution and its federalist assumptions. Perhaps the most important of these was the decision to rescind Roe and return the issue of abortion to the people and their respective states, where it belonged in the first place. This was a tremendous victory for millions of faithful Christians who have fought for decades to see this day. One would think that Christian leaders would be leading the parade of those celebrating.

This past Thursday, Governor J.B. Pritzker and other Democrat members of the Illinois General Assembly held a press conference to trumpet their weak election-year economic "relief" plan. They must be tone-deaf. This temporary plan does very little for working families long-term. High taxes plus the inflated costs of gasoline, electricity, and food have all but destroyed discretionary spending.

One of the central justifications for the Left's proposed court-packing scheme is to claim that the reversal of Roe v. Wade is so radically out of step with the American public that it is an undemocratic, minoritarian power grab. Not only is the argument based on the unconstitutional notion that justices should weigh the vagaries of public opinion before ruling but it also relies on the irreconcilable claim that empowering the public to vote on an issue unmentioned in the Constitution is an attack on "democracy."
