2010-7-14 - Chicken or the Egg

Written by John Biver

An old saying in politics is that nothing moves unless it’s pushed. Among other things, big government must be downsized, and that alone is going to require new leadership and a sizable force of committed volunteers to win public support so it can get accomplished.

What comes first, new leadership or a sizable force of committed volunteers? For the record, I believe God created the chicken first, not the egg. First, we need leaders — yes, even at the local level.… Continue Reading

Instead of being applauded for recognizing that words matter, Mitt Romney is being lambasted by Republicans who just don’t get it.

Speaking to a full house of RNC members in San Diego, Romney committed the conservative crime of using the language of the left to appeal to potential voters. While emphasizing that conservative principles will be critical in the post-Obama era, Romney articulated three maxim’s that Republicans must communicate to the American people: “[T]o make the world safer… and provide opportunity for all Americans regardless of the neighborhood they live in” and the apparently gag-inducing, oxygen-sucking notion that “We have to lift people out of poverty.”… Continue Reading

This level of incompetence and cowardice should alarm us all.

January 22, 2015 marked the 42nd anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court legalizing abortion on demand throughout pregnancy. The pro-life movement commemorates this day with marches, worship services and lobbying for bills to protect unborn children. Pro-lifers were promised by the Republican leaders they just helped elect and re-elect that the U.S. House of Representatives would pass a bill on Thursday, banning most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, a point after which infants can feel pain and survive if born prematurely.… Continue Reading

The more optimistic among us may hope that the Republicans will nominate somebody who stands for something, rather than the bland leading the bland — the kind of candidates the Republican establishment seems to prefer, even if the voters don’t.

With 2015 just getting under way, the buzz of political activity makes it seem almost as if we are already in the midst of the 2016 presidential campaign.

Among the Democrats, Hillary Clinton is honing her message to appeal to the mindset of the left wing of her party, whose support she will need in her second attempt to get the nomination as the Democrats’ presidential candidate in 2016.… Continue Reading

I’ve been inundated with requests this past week to comment on the NOAA and NASA reports that 2014 was the “hottest” year on record. Since I was busy with a Japan space agency meeting in Tokyo, it has been difficult for me to formulate a quick response.

Of course, I’ve addressed the “hottest year” claim before it ever came out, both here on October 21, and here on Dec.… Continue Reading

Barack Obama

Perhaps the most striking thing about the 2015 State of the Union address was not the president at the podium but the audience in the seats. The joint session of Congress listening to President Obama Tuesday night included 83 fewer Democrats than the group that heard Obama’s first address in 2009 — 69 fewer Democrats in the U.S. House and 14 fewer in the U.S. Senate. The scene in the U.S. House Chamber was a graphic reminder of the terrible toll the Obama years have taken on Capitol Hill Democrats.… Continue Reading

Two events recently transpired that forced mainstream media to address a question they habitually dodge: Is Islam intrinsically violent?  First, on New Year’s Day, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi — a world leader, and a Muslim — did the unthinkable when he publicly asserted that Islamic texts and thinking have made the Muslim world a scourge to humanity. The MSM ignored it until, as if to prove his point, Muslim gunmen shouting “Allahu Akbar” killed a dozen people in offices of a satirical newspaper in Paris.… Continue Reading

The Obama administration has declared that it’s wiser than business owners when it comes to running their own companies.

After President Barack Obama’s recent announcement of his policy that would force small business owners to pay a mandatory sick leave to their employees, many in the private sector have been up in arms. Owners of private companies raised many concerns with the problematic mandate, which many believe oversteps the government’s reach.… Continue Reading

A former U.S. Justice Department attorney says he’s hopeful that a Republican presidential candidate will emerge who shows the moral clarity to confront evil and not appease radical Islamists.

The Obama administration has drawn criticism from Republican lawmakers over the president’s decision to release five more Guantanamo detainees. Four of the five Yemeni terrorists headed for Oman, Yemen’s neighbor, fueling speculation that they will soon be back in the terrorist business.

The administration is taking heat not only for the Gitmo transfers, but for its refusal to publicly call out radical Islam as the common thread in terrorist attacks.… Continue Reading

A few days ago, two political philosophy professors whose work I studied in college, died on the same day. Both lived long lives, Walter Berns was 95, and Harry Jaffa was 96.

Here is Peter Augustine Lawler writing at National Review (emphasis is mine):

Berns and Jaffa, two legendary teachers and scholars, died last Saturday within hours of each other. What tied them together is they were both students of Leo Strauss, and all of their writing was fundamentally indebted to “disruptive innovations” that Strauss introduced into our understanding of thought and politics.…… Continue Reading
