Keep Fighting for The SAVE America Act

Written by David E. Smith

Americans should have confidence that every legal vote is counted — and that every voter participating in our elections is legally eligible to do so.

That is the simple premise behind S.3752, the SAVE America Act (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility), a major election integrity proposal backed by President Donald J. Trump. This federal legislation would require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections, strengthen voter ID protections, and help ensure that American elections are decided by American citizens.

Unfortunately, the SAVE America Act recently fell short in the U.S. Senate. Carol Davis, chairwoman of the Illinois Conservative Union and a longtime advocate for election integrity, called the Republican’s failure to act unacceptable. After years of working to protect the integrity of our elections, Davis summarized the frustration of millions of Americans:

Every day, we are being slapped in the face with the cold reality that there are problems with our elections. Case in point: the turmoil with the recent election in California. The SAVE America Act can be a big step toward resolving some of these problems and restoring confidence in the electorate. Voters need reassurance: YES, my vote does count! The support for voter ID is growing, not shrinking, yet our “public servants” (our legislators!) drag their feet on this legislation. Don’t be silent! We must keep up the pressure– pass the SAVE America Act!

Hopeful Signs?

An effort to attach the legislation to a Department of Homeland Security funding package failed by a vote of 48–50. While every U.S. Senate Democrat opposed the amendment, four Republican senators — Susan Collins (Maine), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Mitch McConnell (Kentucky), and Thom Tillis (North Carolina) — also voted against advancing the measure.

The defeat is disappointing, especially as concerns continue to grow about weaknesses in America’s election system. Reports of noncitizens being placed on voter rolls and voter fraud investigations around the country are reminders that election safeguards matter.

Requiring proof of citizenship is not controversial. It is common sense. American citizenship should mean something, and protecting the integrity of the ballot box should not be a partisan issue.

The good news is that this fight is not over.

Supporters of the SAVE America Act are already looking ahead and working to build enough support to finally get these election reforms across the finish line. With upcoming Senate changes and continued pressure from concerned citizens, election integrity advocates believe there may be another opportunity to pass these protections.

Take ACTION: Click HERE to send a message to President Trump, U.S. Senators Dick Durbin, and Tammy Duckworth asking them to support election integrity by voting in favor of the SAVE America Act. This legislation would provide reasonable safeguards that ensures only eligible citizens are added to voter rolls.

Christians and all concerned citizens must remain engaged. Free and fair elections are essential to preserving our constitutional republic.

We cannot compromise on election integrity because free, fair, and secure elections are the very foundation of our constitutional republic — without confidence in the process, the legitimacy of every public officeholder is cast into doubt and public trust erodes. When the rules that govern voting are weak, unclear, or unenforced, it not only invites real threats to the accuracy of our outcomes, but it also undermines the principle that every lawful citizen’s voice should count equally and be protected.

The SAVE America Act offers Congress an opportunity to act responsibly, transparently, and courageously — not to advantage one party, but to restore trust in the process itself.

If citizenship matters—if the rule of law matters—if every lawful American vote deserves equal weight—then we must support the SAVE America Act in prayer, in word, and in deed. Fidelity to the U.S. Constitution requires action, not apathy, to preserve the precious gift of self-government entrusted to us by God.

Only American citizens should decide America’s future. Congress should pass the SAVE America Act — and do so without apology.

Please continue to pray for our nation, stay informed, and urge your elected officials to support commonsense reforms that protect the integrity of our elections.
