How the Left and Radical Islam Joined Forces

A growing body of voices is warning that the strangest political marriage in modern America—the coalition between the secular socialist Left and Islamist movements—is no longer a fringe theory. It is reshaping elections, campuses, and the Democratic Party itself.
Dr. Michael A. Youssef, founder and president of Leading The Way, has released a new book making exactly that case. In An Unholy Alliance: How Progressivism Brought About an Islamist Invasion, Youssef—who grew up in Egypt under an Islamist-socialist regime and holds a Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from Emory University—traces what he calls the “Red-Green convergence”: a partnership between Western socialist movements and Islamist activism that exploits democratic freedoms to dismantle the institutions protecting them.
“This is not an alliance built on shared values,” Youssef said. “It is a marriage of convenience between two ideologies that agree on one thing: tearing down Christian civilization.”
The book documents the financial and ideological networks sustaining the alliance, including Qatari funding of American universities and the rise of socialist-Islamist politicians in major U.S. cities. The electoral data is hard to dismiss: CAIR reports a record 255 Muslims now hold elected office nationwide, and a CBS News poll found 53% of Americans view democratic socialism favorably, with only 12% holding a negative view. That shift has translated into real victories—New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani, and primary wins by candidates like Abdul El-Sayed, Chris Rabb, and James Talarico, all running on platforms sympathetic to socialism and Islamist political currents.
Youssef is not the only one sounding the alarm. AMAC’s Kelsey Reinhardt, writing about what she calls “the red-green alliance,” observed the coalition materialize on October 8, 2023—the morning after Hamas slaughtered 1,200 people in Israel—when progressive activists marched alongside Islamist organizers in American streets, “transgender flags flew next to keffiyehs,” and the victims of a massacre were “recast as oppressors” while the murderers became the oppressed.
Muslim reformers have issued some of the starkest warnings. Dalia Ziada, an Egyptian scholar who fled her country after criticizing the October 7 attacks, calls the partnership a “sinful marriage”—tactical, not philosophical, since Marxists want a Marxist state and Islamists want an Islamic one. Asra Nomani, author of Woke Army: The Red-Green Alliance That Is Destroying America’s Freedom, has documented how the coalition operates through campus activism and social-justice rhetoric.
The intellectual roots run deep. As the Jewish Christian Fellowship Association and WND have reported, Islamic socialism was born in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, when Lenin courted the Muslim populations of the Russian empire. Theorists like Sultan Galiev fused Islamic identity with Bolshevik revolutionary theory, and that fusion became foundational to Third World Marxism and, eventually, the Palestinian cause that now animates the American campus Left.
Despite its warning, Youssef says the book is not meant to discourage. Grounded in a biblical worldview, An Unholy Alliance closes with compassion for the spiritually lost and offers a 12-point action agenda for Christians and freedom-loving citizens.
“I have written this book as a wake-up call for the Christian church—and for all of Western society,” he wrote. “There is work you and I can do—work we must do—to preserve our heritage and our civilization for generations to come.”
