U.S. Senator Josh Hawley on Security Failures at Trump Rally

Written by David E. Smith

U.S. Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) is publicly expressing his concerns about the security provided to former President Donald Trump and the multiple failures of the security detail at the Trump campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024. According to information provided by whistleblowers to Hawley, the majority of security personnel at the event were not from the U.S. Secret Service, but rather from the Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) team.

U.S. Senator Hawley has called for a comprehensive investigation into the security failures at the rally, including sworn testimony from the Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and the Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle. He has also written to Secretary Mayorkas and the Inspector General of the Department of Homeland Security, requesting all records related to the security failures.

The shooting incident at the rally, which left President Trump injured, has sparked a significant debate about the effectiveness of the security measures in place. Hawley’s efforts to bring these issues to light highlight the importance of ensuring the safety of public figures and the need for transparency and accountability in security operations.

Hawley recently visited the site of the shooting in Butler County, Pennsylvania, where the assassination attempt was made on Trump. He went to the site to ask questions and gather facts ahead of U.S. Senate hearings on the incident. He shared his experience on the “Sean Hannity” show on Fox News Channel. During the interview, Hawley highlighted the potential lack of experience and preparedness among the HSI team members, who were evidently not prepared to uphold the austere protocols used to protect key officials at public events.

In the wake of these security failures, U.S. Representative Mary Miller (R-Taylorville) is calling for the Secret Service Director to resign following a House briefing on the status of the investigation into the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

Miller released the following statement:

I am gravely concerned that so many important questions remain unanswered, especially as reports suggest law enforcement and Secret Service were aware that this man posed a threat at multiple points during the day.

I fully support the special House task force suggested by Speaker Johnson and Representative Cory Mills to investigate this matter, including the revelation that Secret Service diverted resources to a last-minute Jill Biden event in Pittsburgh despite threats from Iran against President Trump’s life.

The American People deserve answers on how the leading candidate for President came within an inch of being assassinated, and Secrete Service Director Kimberly Cheatle should resign for failing to adequately protect President Trump.

Additionally, NBC Chicago is reporting that U.S. Representative Darin LaHood (R-Peoria) is also deeply concerned, saying the “Secret Service has one job to do: that’s to protect the entity that they’re in charge of protecting. That didn’t happen,”

U.S. Representative Mike Bost (R-Murphysburo), told The Pantagraph that Cheatle “needs to go.”

The three Illinois Republican Congress members join U.S. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and a host of other Republican officials demanding her resignation or her firing. As of this writing, Cheatle is scheduled to testify to the U.S. House Oversight Committee on Monday.
