A conservative political pundit believes Scott Walker must win the Iowa caucuses next year if he has any chance to win the 2016 GOP presidential nomination.

After months of speculation, the Wisconsin governor made it official on Monday, announcing he is a candidate for 2016 Republican presidential nomination. David Bozell, president of the politically active not-for-profit ForAmerica, describes Walker as “living proof that conservatism works if you’re willing to fight for it.”

“Walker doesn’t back down, unlike the GOP leadership in Washington he’s never intimidated and, because of that, he gets results that benefit the people who elected him,” adds Bozell.

Governor Walker has built a national profile largely due to his clashes with labor unions, and he has consistently held on to the number-two spot in most polls, trailing frontrunner Jeb Bush. A video announcing his candidacy is heavy on images of Walker speaking to a crowd in an Iowa cornfield, as well as images from his 2010 battle with unions. Bozell believes the key for Walker is Iowa.

“Scott Walker – more than any of the candidates, I think – has to win Iowa. If he cannot win the state that’s right next door to him, I think a lot of folks are going to say Wait a minute, maybe he’s not our candidate,” he tells OneNewsNow. “So I think the pressure, more than any of the candidates, is going to be on Scott Walker to win in Iowa.”

Bozell adds that he’s not overly concerned about doubts expressed by some conservatives about the governor’s commitment to cultural issues.

“He does have a 20-week ban on abortion about to go to his desk to sign that the Republican legislature just passed. I think that’s a huge feather in his cap,” says the ForAmerica leader. “He’s been out front saying he wanted it. He’s been out front saying he’ll sign it. There are no strings, there are no exceptions – it’s pretty legit.”

Bozell believes that legislation will go a long way in reassuring social conservatives about where Walker stands on that and similar issues.
