Mayor Johnson’s Answer to Bloody Chicago Weekend is More Support for Trans Chicagoans

Written by Alyssa Sonnenburg

Over the 19th-21st “Juneteenth” weekend, Chicago experienced multiple violent shootings.

While weekend shootings have become commonplace in the makeup of Chicago living, what was uncommon was both the level of violence and the shocking response from Mayor Brandon Johnson.

Not to mention that this bloody weekend caught national attention to the point where President Trump has once again offered Governor J.B. Pritzker law enforcement help.

What left 7 dead and multiple injured, prompted an unexpected and confusing response from Mayor Johnson.

Instead of taking action steps to limit violence (such as keeping violent criminals in jail pretrial), Mayor Johnson decided that the most important issue was the safety of the trans community!

On Sunday, the 21st, Mayor Johnson took to X:

“For too many transgender Chicagoans, the sense of belonging they deserve in their city has been denied by exclusion and barriers to opportunity in spaces that should feel safe and welcoming. Since declaring a Transfemicide State of Emergency, our administration has strengthened the City’s capacity to support LGBTQ+ Chicagoans. This framework builds on that work by centering the voices and lived experiences of trans Chicagoans to chart a path toward a safer, more connected city.”

Matt Walsh, host of The Matt Walsh Show on The Daily Wire, responded to Johnson’s outlandish statement:

“‘Transfemicide state of emergency’

Beyond parody. And delusional. The trans murder rate is actually LOWER than the general population. And basically every trans murder victim is killed because of domestic issues, drugs, or prostitution. “Anti-trans hate crimes” are a fantasy.”

Despite what the media will tell you, facts don’t lie.

In 2025, Chicago experienced 1,848 total gun injuries and 416 total homicides.

Of those homicides, one was a trans homicide. One out of 416.

President Trump took to Truth Social to address Governor Pritzker:

“Lots of killing going on in Chicago. 22 people shot, at least 4 dead…

Why isn’t Governor Pritzker calling me for help? I could make Chicago a safe city in ONE MONTH. In ONE YEAR, it would be one of the safest!!! D.C. went from one of the worst to one of the safest cities in the U.S.”

Some wonder why Chicago continues to experience such commonplace violence.

The answer is clear.

The leadership of Chicago and Illinois has consistently failed to address the root issues of crime escalation and do the opposite of what needs to be done.

Mainly, the very laws that have been passed by Democrats directly prohibit justice from taking place, putting citizens at great risk.

  • The SAFE-T Act, passed in 2021, eliminated cash bail.
  • The Pre-Trial Fairness Act, passed in 2021, allows judges the discretion to release a defendant pretrial if it’s a misdemeanor charge or he determines no probable cause. The law states that all defendants shall be presumed eligible for pretrial release.
  • In 2023, Illinois lawmakers relaxed parole supervision policies, favorable to convicted criminals, in the Unified Code of Corrections.
  • In 2023, they removed fines and penalties for those 18 and younger who break the law, eliminating a deterrent to criminal activity among youth.
  • And also in 2023, a bill allowing non-citizens to become police officers became law.

These bills, and more, have negatively impacted the ability for justice to prevail against criminal activity.

And leadership does not care.
