Growing Fears of Government Weaponization

During a U.S. House Judiciary Committee Hearing on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, U.S. Representative Victoria Spartz (R-IN) emphatically complained to Attorney General Merrick Garland that there is growing fear of government persecution among Americans, saying at one point, “It’s like KGB.”

In a subsequent Tweet later, she points out:

“As someone who grew up in the Soviet Union, I’m disturbed by the fact that so many hardworking Americans—including my constituents—are afraid of political persecution by our own government.”

Unfortunately, it does not seem like AG Garland is.”

Rep. Spartz also points out that she is simply speaking up for her constituents, who are concerned about the political weaponization of the FBI. She has also said that she is not comparing the United States to the Soviet Union, but that she is concerned about the direction the country is headed in. There is growing evidence that the FBI is being weaponized against conservatives for their political beliefs. The FBI’s use of surveillance tactics and its prosecution of January 6 protesters may be front-and-center for the liberal media — after all, even former FBI employees have made these accusations publicly in a special U.S. House committee investigative hearing back in May. Yet we have many other recent examples:

• The U.S. Department of Justice is accused of targeting traditional Catholics as “extremists.”

• The U.S. Department of Justice is accused of weaponizing the FACE Act against peaceful pro-lifers.

• The arrest of Mark Houck, a father of seven, who regularly prayed in front of Planned Parenthood in Pennsylvania. Mr. Houck was prosecuted  for supposedly injuring or attempting to injure an abortion mill escort. Now acquitted of the charges, Mr. Houck plans to run for Congress.

• The Biden Administration’s FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice have been weaponized against parents advocating for their children at school board meetings. Shortly after a letter from the National School Board Association (NSBA) called for the DOJ to use the PATRIOT Act against concerned parents attending school board meetings, the DOJ announced it would be taking steps to combat “the rise in criminal conduct directed towards school personnel” in a memo that went public.

• The U.S. Department of Education is using it’s authority to counter and intimidate parents who want to remove inappropriate and obscene material from school libraries.

• The Federal Trade Commission used it’s regulatory authority to sue Dr. Eric Nepute for supposedly “deceptive marketing practices” regarding the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 because he dared to promote vitamin D and zinc to fight the virus.

• The indictment of Chaplin Stephen Lee, an Orland Park, Illinois minister who is being charged with conspiring to “conduct and participate in a criminal enterprise in Fulton County, Georgia…”, for exercising his First Amendment rights.

• Earlier this year, Illinois Democrats passed a bill (SB 1909) authorizing the Attorney General to prosecute Pregnancy Care Centers and sidewalk counselors for “deceptive marketing practices.” Specifically, the bill grants the Attorney General the right to penalize a pro-life center if it “appears” that it has “engaged in, is engaging in, or was about to engage in [a deceptive] method, act, or practice.” This bill, which was signed into law by Gov. JB Pritzker on July 27, 2023, allows the Attorney General to investigate a pregnancy care center it merely believes engages in deceptive practices. This law is currently being challenged in federal court.

And perhaps the most overlooked case of government weaponization is the FBI’s interference with the 2016 and 2020 elections with false claims of Russian collusion:

• Special Counsel John Durham’s report concludes the FBI did not have enough intelligence to merit a full Trump-Russia investigation. Yet the FBI pursued their investigation of Trump, which was based heavily on unverified information from Christopher Steele, a former British spy. Outrageously, the FBI intentionally failed to disclose the fact that Steele’s work was funded by the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton’s campaign. It turns out that Donald J. Trump was correct, it was a hoax. (Read more HERE.)
