Climate Change Hysteria Grips the Democratic Party

Written by Timothy J. Dailey

On Tuesday, July 9, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont joined U.S. Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Earl Blumenauer of Oregon in introducing a resolution declaring that climate change is a national emergency, seemingly oblivious to the fact that the notion of global warming is coming under increased scrutiny.

While the vast majority of the scientific community continues to march in lockstep to the mantra of climate change, dissent is growing. ScienceDaily.com notes that “there is also a small but vocal number of scientists in climate and climate-related fields that disagree with the consensus view.”

The alarmist Democrat-sponsored resolution “express(es) the sense of Congress that there is a climate emergency which demands a massive-scale mobilization to halt, reverse, and address its consequences and causes.”  Then, as if to undermine the urgency expressed by the first clause, the resolution goes on to state that “nothing in this concurrent resolution constitutes a declaration of a national emergency for purposes of any Act of Congress authorizing the exercise … of any special or extraordinary power.”

The contradictory resolution mirrors the ambivalence of the public at large. According to a recent Gallup poll, while a majority of Americans believe that climate change is occurring, only 44 percent “worry a great deal about global warming.” Neither, apparently, does President Donald J. Trump, who in 2017 decided to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement, which aims to combat global warming by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane, calling the agreement “onerous” and “harsh.” Others, such as Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry, are more blunt. In a press conference in February, Landry called the theory that human activities are the primary cause of climate change a “hoax.”

How much global warming has actually occurred? NASA reports that “the planet’s average surface temperature has risen about 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit (0.9 degrees Celsius) since the late 19th century” – a period of well over a century. While that is an insignificant increase, we know that well before the industrial age (and the internal combustion engine/greater CO2 emissions) our planet experienced a number of natural warming and cooling cycles. Some scientists suggest that the intensity of solar activity has far greater influence our climate temperature. Weak solar activity (fewer sunspots) result in colder climate conditions. Strong solar activity result in warmer temperatures.

And then there is the question of the massive amount of money required to solve a dubious “national emergency” and who will pay for it. The International Energy Agency has estimated that switching from fossil fuels to low-carbon sources of energy will cost an astounding $44 trillion between now and 2050.

Undeterred, Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives appear relentless in their goal of making climate change the preeminent issue of our day and will not hesitate to employ hyperbole and outright distortion to drive the nation bankrupt and drown Americans in a sea of new bureaucratic regulation. Thankfully, increasing numbers of Americans are warming up to the climate change skeptics and are unwilling to capitulate to the Democratic agenda.
