The Battle Over Words, Worldviews, and the Womb

Written by David E. Smith

Last week, Governor JB Pritzker stood alongside State Senator Celina Villanueva (D-Chicago), State Representative Mary Beth Canty (D-Arlington Heights), Megan Jeyifo of the Chicago Abortion Fund, and other abortion cheerleaders at a press conference celebrating the passage and signing of the Reproductive Health Privacy Act (HB 5295).

As we reported in an article last week, this new law mandates that abortion-related and transgender-related medical records be electronically segregated and limits disclosure through health information networks.

Gov. Pritzker and his pro-abortion allies intentionally used the fourth anniversary of the Dobbs decision which struck down Roe v. Wade and sent the issue back to the states, saying:

Since Dobbs, states across this nation have enacted draconian abortion bans, restricted access to lifesaving healthcare and empowered politicians to interfere in the personal medical decisions of women.

He continued by highlighting their work to expand the industry in Illinois, saying:

In this state, we have established reproductive healthcare as a fundamental right. We have established and strengthened our shield laws to protect patients and providers from out of-state investigations and prosecutions. We have expanded access to contraception and medication abortion. We have invested in reproductive healthcare and in the infrastructure that’s necessary for it. We have partnered with providers and advocates to make sure that healthcare, and that’s what this is, is available to those who seek it, but our work is never finished because the opponents of reproductive freedom continue searching for new ways to restrict women’s rights, intimidate providers, and insert government into personal medical decisions.

Spinning the Language

What struck me most about the press conference was the disciplined rhetoric. Words and phrases were carefully chosen, repeated, and used to frame the debate.

The phrase “reproductive rights” was used seven times. “Reproductive healthcare” was repeated eight times. The phrase “abortion care” was used six times, and “reproductive freedom” was mentioned four times.

But these carefully crafted labels cannot change the reality of what abortion is. They put a polished public relations message on the tragic destruction of innocent preborn human life.

Yes, being pregnant is a reproductive issue, but a procedure or a pill that is designed intentionally to destroy a growing human fetus cannot be legitimately called “healthcare.” It is anything but treating, restoring or promoting the pre-born baby’s well-being.

The oft-repeated word “reproduction” itself is worth considering. What exactly is being reproduced? Is it not another member of the human family? A unique human being whom is created in the image and likeness of Almighty God?

Furthermore, it is important to note that when Senator Villanueva came to the podium to speak, she proudly shared that she comes from “a very, very large Mexican family.” She happily told the media:

“My mother was one of 10. My father is one of nine. I have a lot of first cousins. I got a lot of people and our get-togethers are very loud and boisterous…”

Is this not something worth celebrating? Large families. Generations of children. Cousins, laughter, memories, traditions, and the blessing of family members who love and care for one another.

But it raises an important question: If every family gathering is made richer by the people who are there, how many stories, relationships, talents, and lives have been lost because someone decided another child should never have the opportunity to be born?

Similarly, Representative Canty came to the podium declaring, “I am a mother by choice, and I am a mother for choice.”

Those words deserve serious reflection. Every mother understands the immeasurable value of her own children. Yet the worldview behind this wicked ideology insists that whether a child is welcomed into a family or denied the opportunity to be born rests solely on another person’s choice.

According to this worldview, the “right to life” is no longer truly unalienable—it becomes conditional, subject to human approval. To make matters worse, it is aided and abetted by government policies that fail to protect the human rights of our neighbors in the womb, the most defenseless among us.

To put this in a wider context, Illinois Democrats (and Democrats nationwide) continue pursuing pro-abortion, anti-baby policies at a time when birth rates are falling to alarming levels around the world. The birth rate in the United States has fallen to a historic low of 1.57 children per woman, well below the 2.1 replacement level needed to maintain a stable population without immigration. In Illinois, that rate is even lower at 1.50, down from 1.54 in 2022 and 1.65 in 2019.

At the very moment when marriage and children should be encouraged and celebrated, our state’s leaders continue expanding laws that promote abortion rather than policies that affirm and protect life.

Worldview Matters

Ultimately, this debate reveals two very different worldviews. A biblical worldview understands that marriage, family, and children are gifts from God and that human life has inherent value because every person is created in His image. A secular worldview increasingly sees marriage and family as human inventions, children as optional accessories, and personal autonomy as the highest good.

This cultural shift has contributed to growing anti-marriage and anti-child attitudes throughout our society. As Christians living in an increasingly Babylon-like culture, we must faithfully teach our children and grandchildren God’s design for life, marriage, and family—and equip them to respond with both truth and love.

This is why Christians cannot view abortion merely as a political debate or a matter of personal preference. Scripture teaches that every person is created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27), possessing inherent value and dignity from the moment of conception. Our ultimate struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces of darkness that oppose God’s good design for humanity (Ephesians 6:12).

From a biblical worldview, the escalating attacks on preborn babies in Illinois are not surprising. Satan hates God and seeks to destroy those who bear His image. It is tragic that Illinois Democrats continue to collaborate with the Devil to advance policies that result in the destruction of innocent preborn lives rather than protecting and celebrating marriage, family, and the gift of life.

TAKE ACTION: Commit to praying for an end to abortion in Illinois and across the nation. Pray that hearts and minds will be changed, that mothers and fathers will choose life, and that our laws will once again recognize the God-given dignity of every human being.
