What Illinois’ Latest Mental Health Bill Means For Your Children’s Future

Written by Alyssa Sonnenburg and David E. Smith

As the Illinois state legislature continues to push more and more government control over parental rights and education, parents are waking up to this dangerous agenda.

In this episode, IFI’s Dave Smith sits down with Shannon Adcock to discuss the real consequences of SB 3138, a bill designed to bypass parental oversight as it relates to mental health screenings and gender confusion. This legislation would expand LGBTQ+ influence over children’s mental health policy in Illinois—moving from advisory roles to shaping programs, data, and policy.

Shannon Adcock is the executive director of Awake Illinois, a non-profit organization that advocates for conservative principles in education and government in the state of Illinois.

“They in government are trying to replace the mom and the dad.”

Background

Make no mistake: SB 3138 represents a significant expansion of influence and control within the state’s behavioral health system—and a direct intrusion into the lives of public school students and their families. When every child is screened, more students will inevitably be flagged.

That concern is reinforced by a recent poll from Blue Shield of California’s BlueSky youth mental health initiative, which claims that 94% of teens are facing “mental health challenges.” That raises serious questions:

Do parents have the final authority over whether their children are screened?

Who is making these determinations—trained clinicians working with parents, or school personnel and outside contractors using broad, subjective criteria?

What worldview is shaping these evaluations?

Who defines what qualifies as a “mental illness”?

Once a child is labeled “at risk,” who benefits from the next step?

Will recommended treatments become de facto mandates? And if parents disagree, could they face accusations of neglect?

What will this cost Illinois taxpayers?

If you are a parent or a grandparent, this episode is for you.
