Two Lame Duck Republicans from Illinois Vote Against Marriage
Written by David E. Smith
The U.S. House passed H.R. 8404 yesterday to repeal the federal Defense of Marriage Act, also known as DOMA. It passed by a vote of 267-157 with 47 Republicans joining every Democrat. Seven Republicans did not vote.
The bill’s sponsor is leftwing U.S. Representative Jarrold Nadler (D-NY), who has been in Congress for 30 years. There were 179 cosponsors in the U.S. House–all Democrats–who are working feverishly to respond to the Dobbs opinion and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas call to revisit several SCOTUS decisions that contrived special rights that are not enumerated in the U.S. Constitution.
According to an article published by The Hill:
The measure, which faces a shaky future in the 50-50 Senate, calls for the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), a bill former President Clinton signed into law in 1996 that recognized marriage as “only a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife.” The measure referred to the word spouse as “a person of the opposite sex who is a husband or a wife.”DOMA had passed through both chambers of Congress with bipartisan support.
Fifteen of the current eighteen members of Illinois’ Congressional Delegation voted against the federal Defense of Marriage Act, including lame duck Republicans Adam Kinzinger and Rodney Davis.
(Next year, Illinois will only have 17 congressional districts.)

We encourage you to reach out to your federal lawmakers and express your disappointment for their vote. Matrimony is defined by God. No legislation or act of the judiciary will change the fact that marriage is one man uniting with one woman for life. Everything else is a mirage.
Once upon a time governments recognized the importance of marriage and family as the best environment to raise the next generation of healthy and productive members of society. Children need their mother. Children need their father. Moms and dads complement each other because God made them different and equipped them to take on specific roles. This is why government was in the marriage business in the first place – our nation wanted to incentivize the best possible environment for children to thrive.
The government has no interest in inherently non-reproductive types of relationships. The government has no more interest in inherently non-reproductive erotic relationships than it does in platonic friendships.
Marriage has an inherent nature central to which is sexual differentiation. Children have an inherent right to be raised whenever possible by a mother and a father, preferably their own biological parents. And the public good is served in incalculable ways by recognizing and protecting marriage and children’s rights.
Take ACTION: H.R. 8404 may be taken up in the U.S. Senate next week. Please take a moment to speak out to our two U.S. Senators to ask them to vote to protect the Defense of Marriage Act and vote NO to H.R. 8404. Remind them, “The government has no interest in inherently non-reproductive types of relationships. The government has no more interest in inherently non-reproductive erotic relationships than it does in platonic friendships.”
