The Moderate Democrat

Written by Micah Clark

You may have noticed that several news commentators attached the label “moderate” to former New York Mayor, Michael Bloomberg last week when he filed papers to run for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.

A news story appearing at Town Hall.com this week raises some questions about the notion that Bloomberg is a middle of the road Democrat.   It points to a lawsuit against the former mayor in which an employee told him that she was pregnant.  His response was “kill it.”

Bloomberg was apparently upset that another pregnant woman would be added to his payroll.  “Great, number 16” he said in a reference to the number of women on his payroll needing maternity benefits.

The lawsuit, involving sexual harassment was settled outside of court in 2007 with the details being private.  However, some details were leaked to the Associated Press. The employee left Bloomberg LP after his alleged comments saying that she couldn’t stay there after that.

No one I’ve heard using the moderate label with Bloomberg has said what makes him a moderate, but clearly abortion is not it.
