Urgent Abortion ACTION Alert
Written by David E. Smith
Yesterday afternoon, the Illinois House Democrat Caucus met for 2-3 hours to discuss, among other things, the grotesquely misnamed “Reproductive Health Act.” If passed into law, this legislation would dramatically expand abortion–including Medicaid abortions–and usurp parental rights. We expect that the original proposal will be amended and a new (shell) bill number assigned.
Personal PAC, Planned Parenthood of Illinois, the ACLU of Illinois, along with State Representatives Kelly Cassidy (D-Chicago), Sara Feigenholtz (D-Chicago) and Robyn Gabel (D-Evanston) are pushing hard to revive this deadly measure before they adjourn for the summer on May 31st. These left-wing lawmakers are responding to the pro-life laws that have been passed or recently enacted in Alabama, Georgia, Ohio, Missouri and soon in South Carolina. They want to secure Illinois as the Midwest mecca for abortion.
In fear of Roe v. Wade being overturned, they will do everything in their power to preserve the non-existent moral “right” to slaughter inconvenient and imperfect humans in Illinois. According to a February 12th press conference held by the sponsors at the ACLU offices in Chicago, their legislation will do the following:
- Repeal the Illinois Abortion Law of 1975 including criminal penalties on doctors who commit abortion
- Repeal the Partial Birth Abortion ban, thereby allowing babies to be killed up to the time of birth
- Remove any and all regulations on clinics that commit abortion
- Repeal the Parental Notification Act of 1995
- Allow DCFS to use public funds to pay for abortions–which would be in addition to Medicaid
Assisted by House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago), this bill will move very quickly through committee and onto the House floor for a vote. We have a very narrow window to try to stop this from becoming law. According to an article today in the Southern Illinoisan:
Speaker Michael Madigan, D-Chicago, concluded the session by “making clear that they were going to find us a new vehicle for the bill” and it would be assigned to a committee in the coming days, Rep. Kelly Cassidy, also from Chicago, said.
We MUST respond if we hope to keep this from passing into law. First, we need to pray fervently that proponents are unable to get 60 votes to pass this legislation. Second, we have no time to waste in flooding the Capitol with calls, emails and even personal visits. Please do whatever you can! Please speak out!
