SPOTLIGHT: An Addiction Problem in the Making

Written by David E. Smith

With the November election just a month away, this podcast is especially timely! Joining Monte Larrick this week is Anita Bedell, executive director of Illinois Church Action on Alcohol & Addiction Problems. ILCAAAP is committed to preventing problems caused by alcohol, other drugs, and gambling by means of public information and education, as well as legislation.

Anita Bedell and Monte discuss the dangers, deceptive promotion, and miniscule financial benefits of proposed gambling expansion in Illinois. In addition to 5 new casinos across the state, SB 7 would allow for a city-owned and independently-controlled casino in Chicago, increased video gaming, and the introduction of casino gambling at racetracks, internet gambling, and sports wagering, including fantasy sports betting.

After the break, the conversation returns to an important and familiar topic that relates to addiction – the push to legalize high-potency, recreational marijuana in Illinois.

It is crucial for informed voters to investigate the candidates – we recommend consulting the non-partisan IFI Voter Guide – and then vote for legislators that will oppose the expansion of gambling and the carte blanch availability of marijuana in our state.

Take ACTION:  Please contact your state lawmakers in regard to gambling or marijuana legislation which could come up for consideration in the fall 2018 veto session. The Illinois Capitol switchboard number is (217) 782-2000.
