The France Strategy: Could It Work for Iran?

Written by Rev. James McDonald

Ever wonder why the U.S. exists as a free nation today? Spoiler: France played the hero in our Revolutionary War. Without their weapons, cash, troops, and that epic naval win at Yorktown, the British likely would’ve steamrolled us. It wasn’t just charity—it was a smart strategy to weaken a rival, and it worked, birthing a democracy that changed the world.

Now, in 2026, with U.S.-Israeli strikes having taken out Ali Khamenei and key regime targets, crippling Iran’s nuclear ambitions and military reach—could America be stepping up as ‘France’ for the Iranian people? Trump’s call for Iranians to ‘rise up and take back your country’ isn’t just rhetoric; it’s spotting a window after years of crushed protests (shoutout to Woman, Life, Freedom).

Sure, skeptics point to risks like escalation, civilian pain, or another Iraq-style mess—and that’s fair. But here’s why this could be a winning strategy:

  • Proven playbook: Like France betting on organized American rebels after Saratoga, we’re seeing Iranian dissidents, exiles, and even some military defections signaling real potential for internal change. Air power alone won’t do it, but combined with cyber support, sanctions relief for free zones, and intel sharing? It could tip the scales without endless boots on the ground.
  • Big wins at stake: Ending the regime means freeing 88 million Iranians from an evil theocracy, slashing threats from proxies like Hezbollah/Houthis, stabilizing oil prices (hello, lower gas bills), and preventing a nuclear-armed Iran. Polls show most Americans want to counter Iran without full war—this targeted approach could deliver that.
  • Not endless war: History shows interventions succeed when they’re limited and back local forces (think France in 1781, not forever occupations). With Mojtaba Khamenei scrambling as the new ‘leader’ amid protests and economic freefall, this moment feels ripe—if we play it smart.

To those opposed: I get the hesitation after past mistakes. But doing nothing lets repression and terror fester. What if this is the strategic play that actually works for freedom? Thoughts? Could we turn the tide like France did for us?
