Sheridan Gorman’s Death – Tragic and Preventable

Written by Alyssa Sonnenburg

On March 19, 2026, Loyola University Chicago freshman, Sheridan Gorman, was fatally shot by gunman, Jose Medina.

While walking with her friends near Tobey Prinz Beach in Chicago, all hoping to see the Northern Lights, a masked gunman, dressed in all black, started opening fire in a seemingly random attack, according to police.

What the media doesn’t want you to know is that this horrific crime was completely preventable.

Jose Medina, a Venezuelan national, was in the United States illegally. While he was apprehended by Border Patrol in 2023, he was released under the Biden Administration’s guidelines.

In June of 2023, Medina was arrested for shoplifting in Chicago but was again released under Illinois’ sanctuary policies.

Gorman’s family released a statement condemning the sanctuary policies that protect illegal, violent criminals instead of American citizens.

“We are gravely disappointed by the policies and failures that allows this individual to remain in a position to commit this crime.”

The warnings of Scripture prove true time and time again:

“Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.” (Eccl. 8:11)

Enforcement of the law is essential for any society to function in peace and safety.

How many more tragic and preventable deaths need to occur before those who make our laws will have a change of heart?

Pray for justice to rule in Medina’s case, and may the Lord grant comfort to the family as they grieve the loss of Sheridan.
