SPOTLIGHT: Hospice and The End of Life Options Act
Written by Alyssa Sonnenburg
Illinois is currently trying to legalize assisted suicide through the passage of the End of Life Options Act.
This Act, if passed, would give doctors the legal ability to prescribe death-inducing drugs to patients who have been diagnosed with terminal illnesses.
In this episode, Dr. Kevin Garner sits down with Monte Larrick to discuss the dangers this Act pose– not only to the terminally ill but the possible expansion of the bill to include non-terminal conditions and children.
Dr. Garner is an internal medicine specialist and is board certified in hospice and palliative care. He is the medical director for the American Academy of Medical Ethics and is a member of both the Illinois state Medical Society, and the Christian Medical and Dental Association.
“‘Six months to live’ is very inaccurately prognosticated. Doctors are very poor at prognosticating. People often live in hospice for 1, 2, 3, even up to 4 years…
The fact that these ‘terminally ill’ patients can continue to live for a few years after they have ‘6 months to live’ is indicative of how inaccurate prognostication is.”
This is a vitally important episode that you do not want to miss.
