Love Them Both
Written by Alyssa Sonnenburg
Did you know that the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA) includes coverage for the cost of abortions and abortion-related services?
The PWFA, which went into effect on June 27, 2023, was originally intended to provide pregnant workers with reasonable accommodations due to their pregnancy.
“Generally, the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA) requires a covered employer to provide a ‘reasonable accommodation’ to a qualified employee’s or applicant’s known limitations related to, affected by, or arising out of pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions, unless the accommodation will cause the employer an ‘undue hardship.’” (U.S. EEOC)
The original, commendable intent of the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act was radically twisted during the Biden Administration. Under his administration, Biden expanded the PWFA to include forcing employers to pay for their employee’s abortions.
The National Catholic Register noted,
“The final rule expands the scope of accommodations that employers must make for ‘pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions’ to also include workers’ decisions about ‘having or choosing not to have an abortion.’”
In response to this radical abortion accommodation, U.S. Representative Mary Miller (IL-15) has introduced the Love Them Both Act.
This piece of legislation, if passed, would block the U.S. EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) and the Office of Congressional Workplace Rights from interpreting the PWFA from including coverage for abortions.
Essentially, this legislation would go back to the original intent of the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act– protection for pregnant mothers in the workforce.
In her statement on this introduced legislation, Mary Miller commented,
“The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act was meant to support new mothers and their children—not fund the destruction of innocent life. Allowing abortion under this law directly contradicts its purpose. My bill will restore its original intent, protect unborn babies, and stand for the sanctity of life.”
This legislation has already garnered the support from many conservatives including U.S. Representative August Pfluger (TX-11).
In his support for this piece of legislation, Rep. Pluger noted,
“I’m proud to support Rep. Mary Miller’s Love Them Both Act, which stops this regulatory overreach by ensuring pregnancy accommodations support life, not end it, while ensuring the PWFA returns to its intended purpose of helping pregnant workers continue working safely as they prepare for childbirth.
No one should be forced to choose between their conscience and complying with federal law. This legislation accomplishes just that.”
This bill will unfortunately receive pushback from the radical left who view abortion access as a “basic human right.”
Even though this legislation will receive opposition, we should all pray that this bill is eventually passed into law not only so that employers can be protected from financing abortions, but also so more preborn lives can be saved.
