Who’s Guarding the Cradle?

The assault on America’s children from the Democratic Left is unprecedented on our history.  Considering our long and storied history of favoring and protecting children, it is shocking and disgusting; and it must not be ignored!

Until I had children of my own, I did not fully understand how they would change my life and the joy they would bring.  I was always fond of children, but it is not the same as having little ones of your own.

I recall with pleasure the early years of marriage when our children entered our lives one by one.  I walked out of the hospital with our first born feeling as if I were guardian of the greatest treasure on earth, and that I had been given the honor and responsibility of providing and protecting someone of infinite value, a helpless and innocent human being.

A high privilege, indeed!

When our children were young, I would often pause in their bedroom door to watch them snuggled in their beds and listen to their quiet breathing.  I felt a joy I cannot put into words.  Have you ever listened in on the conversation among little ones as they settled down for the night, or as they sang themselves to sleep?

What a pleasure that is!

I suppose this is foreign to those who have no children or have decided they want none.  But my wife and I had seven, who are now all grown, but we would gladly have welcomed seven more!

Thus, the attitude of the contemporary Left, and particularly, the Democratic Party, is incomprehensible to us.  They clearly do not favor children at all.  With the attitude they have manifested toward these little ones they have no business having any influence with or over children.

No one who loves children wants them dead, yet it can not be clearer that the official position of the Democrat Party is decidedly anti-child.

They strongly advocate for small families and ridicule large ones.  While they may have once stated that they wanted abortion to be “safe, legal and rare,” that position has morphed into “reckless, legal, and ubiquitous,” period.

Abortion kills about one out of four children pre-birth, and they seek to expand it more! They promote every possible option for mothers as being essential and vastly superior to staying at home with children even if it requires huge government subsidies.

A “stay at home” mentality, in their thinking, represents ignorance and slavery.  Derogatory terms for mothers are the norm.  Those who choose to have more than two children are often referred to as “brood mares,” “ignorant and barefoot,” “breeder,” “birthing person,” or worse.

Do none of these Democrats consider for even a moment what such terms imply to the children who hear them?  Of course not!  They have rendered children disposable, so why would they care?  Is it any wonder that depression and suicide among young people have skyrocketed in recent years?

A primary reason for the Democrats so strongly supporting open borders and illegal immigration is the fact that their policies have lead to a radical shortage of young people to fill entry level jobs!

Public schools, at the behest of the liberals and Democrats who run them, are categorical failures by every metric.  They neither train children to make a living, nor how to live.  Graduates of the public school system are generally prepared to be nothing more than cogs in the machine of a government run economic system, and those who do well in the end do so not because of their schooling, but in spite of it.

Mark Twain was correct in his assessment that “nothing is more irritating than a good example,” so home school families are now the focus of the Democrats who understand that their failures in educating Illinois’ children are being exposed by the successes of home-schooled children.

The Illinois Democrat run state government is determined to bring home-schoolers under the control of the state so that the failures and obscene abuse of the state’s children by public schools is less obvious.  Again, the welfare of the children is of no interest to them.

Home school parents have removed their children from public schools precisely to protect them from the utter failure and godlessness of the public schools.  We will certainly not lay down and surrender them to the evils and incompetence of government educators!

It has been said,

“Your actions speak so loud I cannot hear a word you say.”

Democrats proclaim their love for children at every opportunity, but tragically, their actions drown out their words.  On every hand they reveal their contempt for these little ones who cannot speak for themselves, cannot defend themselves, and desperately need adults to protect them.

Contemporary Democrats are wolves in sheep’s clothing.

They kill them in the womb, or farm them out to someone else to raise.  They make them the victims of a divorce culture and leave them as prey for illicit drug merchants.  They also fail to give them the skills they need to think critically or provide for themselves.

They teach them they are a burden to society and that they were possibly “born in the wrong body!”  (With all the problems children have in learning to accept themselves why would anyone burden their childish minds further with such lies?)  And the list goes on.

As they say, with friends like these, who needs enemies?

Leftists distain children to the extent that they have come up with a host of reasons for not having children.  Among them is this litany of nonsense:

1. “There are too many people on planet earth,” and thus there will soon be: mass starvation. We will deplete the earth’s resources.  The world will come to an end within a decade due to “climate change” caused by too many people.  Such doomsday scenarios have been propounded for generations and have been repeatedly debunked.  God reigns and He has and will supply for such needs.
2. “We can’t afford more than two children.” Someone who apparently has no practical knowledge of how to finance a family has decided that only multimillionaires can afford children. However, millions of families, like mine (with seven children), have done just fine on a very limited budget.  Frugality is still a virtue.
3. “Having children would tie me down. I have other things more important to do with my life.”  Interesting how it used to be that Leftists argued against materialism in favor of people, but now they champion “stuff” at every opportunity, especially in preference to children.  There are no experiences out there in the world that come close to the joy of having and raising children!
4. “I would not be a good parent.” In some cases, that may be true, especially if the parent is disconnected from reality, as many are; but typically, there is a God-given “instinct,” so to speak, that kicks in with the birth of a child, and that love for his or her child motivates one to rise to the challenge.

Not every person can have children, and there are some valid reasons for a person or couple not having them.  But I declare that without equivocation or exception, if you do not love children there is something dreadfully wrong with your thinking!

Going back to our founding as a nation you will find overwhelming evidence that America loved children.  I am quite confident that among other things, it was this country’s love of children (declared for example, in the Preamble to the Constitution, that the nation was created for “ourselves and our posterity) which caused God to “shed His grace on” us.

The Apostle Paul, in I Timothy, noted that it is the parent’s responsibility to lay up for their children, and that is what loving parents do.  They certainly do not kill them, farm them out to others, or squander their future earnings.  All of nature paints a graphic and moving picture of “mama” and “papa” animals fighting and sometimes dying to protect their young.

Only in recent American history do we see adults turning the tables and sacrificing their children upon the altars of their own pleasures.  This must stop! We need to “Make America Safe for Children Again!”

Such a mindset requires a nationwide repentance for the sins of selfishness, pride, abortion, and immorality of every type, all of which offend the holy and righteous God, and damage and destroy children.

America!  Now is the time to make this right!
