SPOTLIGHT: The Homeschool Act

Written by Alyssa Sonnenburg

The Homeschool Act, also known as HB 2827, poses a grave danger to all homeschooling families across Illinois.

If passed, this bill would stifle the freedoms of homeschooling families through heavy regulations. If these regulations are not followed, families would face hefty fines and possible jail time.

Illinois Christian Home Educators (ICHE) is an organization that is passionately leading the charge against this dangerous legislation, and Kirk Smith, executive director of ICHE, sits down to discuss the consequences of the bill and how to oppose it.

“This is the battle for this generation of homeschooling… this is a much worse bill– more comprehensive, much broader…

[This bill] assumes that they are the state’s kids rather than the parent’s kids… That’s a big mind shift change. This basically puts us in line with Russia that believes that the state owns the kids…”

Kirk Smith goes on to explain the wording of HB 2827 and how it opens the door for random reporting and DCFS visits.

This is an episode full of vital information that you do not want to miss.
