Are There Repercussions for Legal Suicide?

Written by Alyssa Sonnenburg

Are there repercussions for legal suicide in the state of Illinois?

Robert Gilligan answers this very question on this edition of Illinois Family Spotlight.

Robert Gilligan is the executive director of Catholic Conference in Illinois and, in this episode, he dives into the very real dangers posed to Illinois if physician-assisted suicide is legalized.

“In states where this has been legalized, this leads to more suicide overall. There were 49,000 suicides in the country last year. There are studies out there that determined that legalizing suicide in Illinois will lead to more suicide. This is a major societal problem.

It’s interesting too that the state of Illinois is spending a lot of money, and deservedly so, on mental health services and others to address suicide. Yet at the same time, they’re contemplating legislation to legalize assisted suicide.”
