SPOTLIGHT: Overflowing With Hope: A Conversation With Kirk Smith

Written by Jenna Smith

The next generation of culture warriors hope to make a difference and they are an answer to our prayers. We hope to encourage and mentor these young contributors so they can take the baton from us in the future. God’s gift of liberty and self-government must be fought for and protected. The fundamental principles of faith, virtue, marriage and family must be upheld and taught. Please pray for these bold young culture warriors and extend to them some grace as they hone their skills.

In this edition of Illinois Family Spotlight, Monte Larrick has an interesting conversation with Kirk Smith, executive director of the Illinois Christian Home Educators (ICHE). Over the weekend of May 20th, ICHE hosted their annual homeschool conference at Olivet Nazarene University where families were not only encouraged to educate their children academically, but educate them spiritually.

When asked about the difference between public school and home school, Smith points out that children in government systems are often being taught anti-Christian morals and deceptive worldly philosophies.

They are learning all these. . .ideologies that are not just unbiblical, they’re anti-biblical. There’s a big difference there. It’s one thing to lack reverence, but it’s another thing to be irreverent, and that’s where our school system has gotten. It is blatantly anti-God and enough is enough.

There is so much we can do as Christians to protect and equip families to raise their kids in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, and one of them is to promote home discipleship.

I would encourage pastors to talk about home discipleship. . .this is the time for the church to be the church; so many are running away from the battle rather than running to it, or they’re embracing the enemy. If the church does not rise up, we are in bad straits here in America.
