SPOTLIGHT: Protecting Pregnancy Centers

Written by Alyssa Sonnenburg

In this special episode of Spotlight, Illinois Family features remarks from Ann O’Connor, Vice President of legal affairs for the National Institute for Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA). This lecture, presented at Speakout Illinois 2023, highlights legislation that is targeting pregnancy care centers for the sole purpose of shutting them down. She states the core of what NIFLA is about in her lecture when she says,

While Dobbs did change abortion not to be the law of our land federally, it didn’t change hearts and that’s our job. We have to change hearts about abortion, and that is so hard. Pregnancy centers do that one life at a time… and it’s hard work.

According to data from 2019,

Pregnancy centers provided over 500,000 free ultrasounds to women who were pregnant and who needed to be educated on what was growing in their womb. They provided over 1.5 million diapers, thousands of pregnancy tests, thousands of courses on parenting. There are over 60,000 volunteers who work, without a lot of reward, at pregnancy care centers.

Take ACTION: Click HERE to send a message to your state representative asking him/her to leave PRCs alone by voting against SB 1909. Point out that pregnancy care centers do not engage in “deceptive practices” but rather vital life-giving work. The people at these centers minister to needy, vulnerable women and children and are supported by people of faith across the state who want to be a blessing.
