Sophisticated People Don’t Use the Silly “Pro-Choice” Label
Written by Peter Heck
“No one is pro-abortion.” That’s what the commenter said in response to one of my stories last week about the sudden, unveiled, and frighteningly bold push by progressives to advocate for nothing short of legalizing infanticide. It was nice to see that even with the left’s newfound stomach for abortion that is anything but “safe and rare,” they were still willing to fall back onto tired, worn-out semantical games to justify the gruesome ritual.
It’s tough to imagine a more useless phrase than calling oneself “pro-choice.” We are all pro-choice. That is, we all believe that people should be given choices about the conduct of their own lives. The real question that serious minds have to deal with is, and has always been, what things should a human being not be allowed to choose?
When someone proclaims themselves to be “pro-choice,” a logical mind will always respond by asking, “choice to do what?”
And it’s the answer to that question that the left doesn’t want to confront. After all:
- They don’t believe you have the right to choose to own certain types of weapons.
- They don’t believe you have the right to choose your own doctor.
- They don’t believe you have the right to choose to keep your home set on 72 degrees year around.
- They don’t believe you have the right to choose where to send your children to school.
- They don’t believe you have the right to choose to decline health insurance coverage.
- They don’t believe you have the right to choose to use a voucher to send your child to certain schools.
- They don’t believe you have the right to choose to decline participation in wedding ceremonies that offend your conscience.
- They don’t believe you have the right to choose the entry level wage you want to pay your workers.
- They don’t believe you have the right to choose the size of your sugary cola at the convenience store.
- They don’t believe you have the right to choose the amount of salt you put on your hamburger.
But the right to choose to kill your own baby after nine months in the womb? They are good with that.
That’s why the term pro-abortion is actually the far more accurate and helpful term to use in describing the progressive left. If they don’t like that description, if they don’t want to be known by their allegiance to or acceptance of such a grisly and barbaric act, I don’t blame them.
They alone can change it – and not by playing childish word games.
