Written by Alyssa Sonnenburg

The University of Chicago Institute of Politics, WBEZ, the Chicago Sun-Times, and International House recently covered the three frontrunner Democratic candidates running for the open U.S. Senate seat in Illinois for the upcoming Primary on March 17th.

The debate featured candidates Congresswoman Robin Kelly (D-IL, District 2), Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL, District 8), and Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton.

I watched the debate so that you wouldn’t have to and these are the big takeaways.… Continue Reading

Written by David E. Smith

The shooting and death of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis was tragic, completely avoidable, and deserves a full, transparent investigation and a serious response. We cannot ignore the dangerous reality on the ground: federal law-enforcement officers carrying out a vital mission are being targeted, threatened, doxed, assaulted, and routinely obstructed. That cannot continue.

These mob tactics cross the line. The First Amendment guarantees “the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”… Continue Reading

“Nothing shocks me anymore” is a phrase Christian conservatives find themselves saying with evermore frequency these days, often with a deep sigh. Yet you’ll probably be astounded to learn that Illinois Congressional Democrats voted against the Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act (HR 7909) this week.

Joining most of their fellow Democrats in the U.S. House, they voted “no.” The title of a Fox News report highlights the disgrace: “158 Dems vote against bill to deport illegal immigrants who commit sex crimes.… Continue Reading

Now that we have covered the declared candidates, it’s time to take a look at a few who haven’t yet thrown their hat into the ring. (You can read our previous posts here, here, here and here.)

The Wikipedia page on the “Illinois gubernatorial election, 2018” lists more than a dozen “potential” candidates, but for now we’re only going to focus on three:

Scott Drury (D-Highwood) State Representative from the 58th House District.

Twenty months is a long time in politics. Like it or not, here in Illinois, that is how long the campaign for governor will be. In November 2018, Illinoisans will once again be going to the polls to elect or re-elect someone to run the executive branch — and that race is already underway. There are five Democrats who have announced their candidacy, and several more are rumored to be considering a run.… Continue Reading

According to Roll Call, Illinois Congresswoman Robin Kelly met with the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee about a possible U.S. Senate bid against Mark Kirk, who is considered the most vulnerable senator in 2016.

If Kelly, who is black, enters the race, she’d face a primary against fellow Democratic Rep. Tammy Duckworth, who entered the race a month ago. Democrats say Duckworth, who is disabled, offers a real challenge to Kirk, who is also disabled after a stroke in 2012.… Continue Reading
