U.S. Representative Delia Ramirez (D-Chicago) hosted a news conference along with other left-wing elected officials and progressive advocacy organizations to announce the Reimagining Safety Act. According to her own press release, this federal legislation would:

1. Establish the Department of Community Safety
2. Dismantle DHS, preserving CISA, FEMA, TSA, and Customs functions
3. Abolish ICE and CBP
4. Reinvest funds in our communities
5. Limit government surveillance, rein in unlawful abuses of data, and curb militarized enforcement
6. Begin the process of establishing a separate civil immigration system

On December 18th, officials at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported a record number of foreign nationals at the southern border, with over 12,600 apprehensions in a single day. Those apprehended are often processed and released — which allows “undocumented” immigrants to remain in the U.S. while awaiting immigration proceedings. CBP agents are mandated, by executive order, not to hold illegal aliens for more than 72 hours.
