Who Are the Future Fascists of America?

Written by Laurie Higgins

After reading a book review in the Chicago Tribune, I’ve got a little sumpin’ sumpin’ to say about renowned former New York Times book critic Michiko Kakutani who retired in 2017 and has written the book The Death of Truth, but first a clarification: This is not a defense of President Donald Trump, whose behavior I continue to find problematic but who I am really glad trumped Hillary.

In Kakutani’s newly released book, she says, “If a novelist had concocted a villain like Trump–a larger-than-life, over-the-top avatar of narcissism, mendacity, ignorance, prejudice, boorishness, demagoguery, and tyrannical impulses, she or he would likely be accused of extreme contrivance and implausibilty.”

With the exception of “larger-than-life” and boorishness, this seems an apt description of Barack Obama.

Narcissism

Is there any doubt that Obama is an avatar of narcissism? Is he not in possession of a prodigious ego? What else accounts for statements like this:

“I have become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions.”

“It’s very rare that I come to an event where I’m like the fifth- or sixth-most interesting person.”

“I think that I’m a better speechwriter than my speechwriters. I know more about policies on any particular issue than my policy directors. And I’ll tell you right now that… I’m a better political director than my political director.’’

On the occasion of his nomination, Obama said, “I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment… when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal.”

Even former Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Donna Brazile described Obama in her book as having a “titanic ego.”

Mendacity

Obama was inarguably practiced at the art of deception. Here are a few of his more noteworthy doozies:

“If you like your health-care plan, you can keep it.”

“More young black men languish in prison than attend colleges and universities across America”

“I didn’t call the Islamic State a ‘JV’ team.”

“We have fired a whole bunch of people who are in charge of these [VA] facilities”

“Republicans have filibustered 500 pieces of legislation.”

“The Capitol Hill janitors just got a pay cut.”

Ignorance

Clearly, in endorsing the legal recognition of intrinsically non-marital unions as “marriages,” and abusing his power in the service of sexually integrating private spaces, Obama demonstrated his profound ignorance of the ontology and teleology of marriage, the needs and rights of children, and the profound meaning of sexual differentiation. And let’s not forget his view of pregnancy as a “punishment” and his support for feticide.

Demagoguery

Demagoguery (i.e., appealing to “popular prejudices and false claims and promises in order to gain power”) is the stock-in-trade of “progressives,” and Obama was a demagogic master. Just one example should suffice as evidence of his demagogic skill:

“They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”

Prejudice

Prejudice refers to “an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason,” and as such, opinions formed, even negative opinions, after careful consideration do not represent prejudice. Doesn’t Obama’s religion-clinging epithet reflect a negative, thoughtless, and unreasonable opinion of people of faith–particularly theologically orthodox people of faith.

Don’t “progressives” who are wholly ignorant of the epistemic presuppositions that inhere not only conservative views of marriage and sexuality but also their own presuppositions routinely express unfavorable opinions of conservative views? Therefore, aren’t they prejudiced?

Tyrannical Impulses

Through his rules, regulations, and executive orders, Obama, in effect, usurped the role of legislatures in order to impose his social and political agenda. His presumptuous overreach troubled even “progressive” law professor Jonathan Turley who testified before Congress that “the president [Obama] has exceeded his authority in a way that is creating a destabilizing influence in a tripartite system.”

Ilya Shapiro, senior fellow in constitutional studies at the Cato Institute and editor-in-chief of the Cato Supreme Court Review, wrote that Obama was “blatantly violating the strictures of our founding document.”

According to Chicago Tribune Books Editor Carolyn Kellogg, Kakutani compares Hitler and Lenin to Trump in a number of ways, including “mass appeal” and the “manipulation of language,” to which I say, is she serious?

Leftists worshiped Obama and the ground he swaggered on. And when it comes to the manipulation of language, no Republican, no conservative can compete with any “progressive,” including Obama. Here are examples of words that have been redefined by “progressives” or invented by “progressives” to normalize sexual deviance, including cultic superstitions regarding maleness and femaleness:

marriage, gender, safety, hatred, tolerance, diversity, discrimination, judgmentalism, sexual orientation, transgender, transman, transwoman, transmale, transfemale, transmasculine, transfeminine, cisman, ciswoman, cisgender, chestfeeding man, pregnant man, ze, zir, zirs, they (used now to refer to single person), heteronormativity, gender non-binary, bigender, bicurious, throuple, ally, homophobic, cissexism, cisnormativity, gender fluid, genderqueer, transphobia, pansexual, anti-transmisia, neuroqueer, dead name…

In an interview about her book, Kakutani laments the “the elevation of subjectivity over objective truth,” examining “how we lost our sense of a shared reality, how observable and basic scientific facts came to be routinely contested, how relativism—the belief that everything depends on your point of view—took root in popular culture.”

Ironically, this is exactly what conservative cultural critics have been arguing for years. It’s a  a particularly salient criticism in light of the  mind-boggling public acceptance of the incoherent science-denying “trans” ideology that subordinates objective, immutable biological sex to the disordered subjective desires of those who pretend to be the sex they are not.

In the paranoia emerging from their fear that they may not achieve absolute control over every cultural institution, “progressives” dangle a shiny red herring in front of gullible Americans, trying to convince them that conservatives are the newest incarnation of fascism. Meanwhile these selfsame “progressives” work feverishly to circumscribe (or eradicate) religious liberty, speech rights, association/assembly rights, and gun rights, and to require free Americans to use grammatically incorrect pronouns in order to facilitate sex delusions.

Yeah, right, conservatives are the fascists.
